Goomtee Tea Estate and Retreat

Goomtee Tea Estate and Retreat

Goomtee Tea Estate was planted by Henry Montgomery Lennox in 1899. It was subsequently managed by G.W.O’Brien, who was forced in the aftermath of the Second World War to sell it to the ruling Rana of Nepal. In the mid-1950s it was taken over by co-owners: the Kejriwal family and Mahabir Prasad.

Goomtee Tea Estate is spread over 110 hectares (270 acres), out of a total area of 225 hectares (560 acres) at an altitude ranging from 3,000 to 6,000 feet (910 to 1,830 m).

Goomtee Tea Estate and Retreat is a village in the Kurseong division of Darjeeling district. It is not a village, but a cluster of villages in a large area known locally as Sittong Khasmahal. The place has become famous among tourists as it is the heart of the orange growing countryside of Darjeeling hills. However, Sittong has much more to offer to the tourists apart from its oranges.

The Goomtee Tea Garden Retreat is located inside one of Darjeeling's most serene tea gardens and offers an atmosphere of peace, seclusion and natural beauty. It is not a spa or a fancy hotel but a simple and authentic place to enjoy the soothing ambience and glorious tea. Excellent international vegetarian cuisine (including egg items) and minimalism are on offer here. The silence and serenity may not be for everyone but it is certainly for those who are looking for a peaceful and lazy retreat away from all the hustle-bustle of urban life.
